Flat-track roller derby action continues in East Hawaii as the Paradise Roller Girls take on the Maui Roller Girls at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Honokaa Sports Complex.

Flat-track roller derby action continues in East Hawaii as the Paradise Roller Girls take on the Maui Roller Girls at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Honokaa Sports Complex.

Paradise Roller Girls members promise an exciting late afternoon of free-wheeling heart and grit. The event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

After the sanctioned game, PRG and the Maui Roller Girls will mix up the teams and have a fun spy vs. spy-themed 30-minute game.

“One of the things I love about derby is that we can play hard against another team on the track, and we can still be friends that appreciate and learn from each other,” says PRG coach Alison “Nerf Hurt-Her” Wagner. “This ability to compete fiercely and then mix it up for fun epitomizes good sportsmanship and athleticism, and is part of what makes roller derby unique.”

Paradise Roller Girls is open to members of all ages, skill and fitness levels. All the team asks for is a positive attitude, dedication and desire to compete.

Like most flat-track leagues, Paradise Roller Girls is an amateur sports league, meaning the athletes are not paid — they do it for the love of the sport.

“We are your mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, daughters and friends,” said team representative Rebecca Rubenstein. “Our league is focused on promoting healthy and athletic lifestyles, while giving back through community service, outreach and charity.”
